10 Ways to Talk About School

1. Ask Questions- Take opportunities like car rides, dinner, or bedtime routines to ask a few questions about your child's day.

2. Be Specific- Avoid asking questions with yes or no answers. Instead of "Did you learn anything today?" you can try "What did you learn today in reading?"

3. Share- When your child tells you about their day, share information about your day too! Give them a chance to ask questions about how you spent your day.

4. Problem Solve- Every day has challenges! Talk about some troubles your child may have faced during the day. Then, discuss ways your child could solve the problems they had.

5. Think Positive- Talk about three positive things that happened in their day.

6. Subjects- Focus on specific subjects like reading, writing, math, social studies, or science. Ask what they learned in those areas.

7. Set a Goal- Some days, your child might find some things they could work on. Set a goal for the next day or week based on how today went.

8. Free Share- Give your child time to share anything they'd like to with you!

9. Outside the Classroom- Remember you can ask about recess, lunch, and special classes too!

10. Lunch Talk- Simple questions about what they had for lunch or who they sat with can open the door to conversation!
